Legal
Privacy Policy
Our games have no accounts, ads or tracking. To balance and fix them, they may send us anonymous play data that isn't tied to your name or any account. The only personal information we hold is your email address, if you sign up for our newsletter or write to us.
This policy covers the games made by Walking Ideas, including Oshiro and Rises and Falls, on every platform, and the website walkingideas.com. "Walking Ideas", "we" and "us" mean the studio, based in Berkeley, California, USA.
In our games
On your device
Your saved game and settings stay on the device you play on. We don't receive a copy. Uninstalling the game, or clearing your browser's site data, deletes them. If you turn on Steam Cloud, Steam keeps a copy of your saves in your Steam account.
Our games contain no advertising and no third-party tracking code. They don't use an advertising identifier, and they don't ask for your name, email, location, contacts, photos, camera or microphone. When online, the game downloads a small news notice for its main menu from walkingideas.com. That request reaches our server like any web request (see server logs).
Anonymous play data
To balance puzzles and find bugs, our games may send us anonymous data about how they are played. This covers your progress, scores, time and hints used; your choices and settings; technical details such as game version, device model, operating system and performance; error reports; and a random ID the game makes when it first starts. It never includes your name, email, store or Steam account, contacts, location or advertising ID, and we don't try to work out who you are from it.
We use play data only to understand, improve and fix our games, mostly as totals, such as how many players finish a puzzle. It travels over an encrypted connection, and we don't store your IP address with it. Where a game sends play data, you can turn it off in its Settings, and the game works the same without it. We delete it, or reduce it to totals, within 24 months.
Purchases
Games and in-game purchases are bought through the App Store, Google Play, Steam or itch.io, which handle your payment and account under their own privacy policies (Apple, Google, Steam, itch.io). We never receive your payment details. The game only asks the store whether you own the full game. Stores also send us sales reports and crash reports you choose to share. Neither tells us who you are.
If you test an unreleased build through TestFlight or Firebase App Distribution, those services use your invitation email and basic device details to deliver it.
On walkingideas.com
The site sets no cookies, runs no analytics and loads no third-party scripts or fonts. Our web server, and Vercel for the copy of the web game it hosts, log each request: IP address, time, page, referring page and browser. We use the logs only to keep the site running and secure, and delete them on a rolling basis, normally within 90 days.
If you sign up for our letters, Kit stores your email address and may record whether a letter was opened or a link clicked (Kit Privacy Policy). We use your address only for our letters. Every letter has an unsubscribe link. If you email us, we keep the conversation for as long as it is useful.
Sharing
We don't sell your personal information or play data, share it for advertising, or use it for automated decisions about you. A few service providers help us run things: hosting, backups, error tracking, the app stores and Kit. They process data only on our behalf. We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect people's safety. Our services run from the United States, so data is processed there or wherever those providers operate.
Children
Our games are for all ages. Play data is anonymous and is never used to identify, contact or advertise to anyone. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, or the minimum age where you live. If a child has given us their email address, tell us and we will delete it.
Your rights
Wherever you live, you can ask what personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct or delete it. Turning off play data in a game's Settings stops it being sent, and we'll help find and delete what was already sent. Unsubscribing stops the newsletter, and we'll delete your address from Kit on request.
Residents of California (CCPA) also have the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do neither. Residents of the EEA, UK and Switzerland (GDPR) can also object to or restrict our use of their data, receive a copy of it, withdraw consent, and complain to their data protection authority. We send the newsletter with your consent, and handle play data, server logs and email on the basis of our legitimate interest in improving our games and helping you. We won't treat you differently for using any of these rights.
Changes
If a game starts to collect anything new, we will update this policy before that version is released and change the date at the top. For important changes we will also tell newsletter readers.
